L'apprentissage de la cornemuse ou des instruments de percussion (caisse claire, tenor et grosse caisse) nécessite un travail très régulier et rigoureux ainsi qu'une technique de jeu sans faille. Le support des partitions écrites est indispensable pour tout musicien débutant ou confirmé, afin de pouvoir obtenir une unité musicale cohérente et synchronisée au sein du groupe. Tout autre discours occultant la connaissance du solfège et affirmant un apprentissage "à l'oreille" ne serait qu'une tromperie hautement préjudiciable vis à vis de la musique écossaise traditionnelle.
